New "HO" Models of the ALCO FA2 and FB2 Locomotives!
History of the Alco FA-2 Diesels:
Alco Locomotive Works made a name for itself in the 1940's and 1950's by building the Famous "PA-1" diesels which were intended mostly for high-speed intercity passenger and freight traffic.
Alco also built what they called the "FA-2" series which were intended for mostly freight
and branchline service. And the railroads often designed different paint schemes for their freight locomotives, than used on the fancy PA-1 "name train" passenger diesels.
But the FA-2's where eventually found pressed into passenger service as much as freight service. So it was not unusual to find an pair of FA-2's dressed in their freight colors pulling a passenger train on a major branch line, or off hours traffic where the lenght of the train was
shorter than the "name" intercity train, such as the Broadway Limited.
Bachmann has revived the HO FA-2's they made some years ago, and has upgraded the mechanism, added a lot more
body details such as seperate wire handrails. They also have made this run of FA-2's in two versions... the basic version comes ready for traditional 12 volt "DC" running
with a standard HO Power Pack supply. They also make them with factory supplied built in "DCC" decoders that will run great on any "DCC" powered layout.
Since the FA-2's have the shorter wheel base, they run perfect on the smaller layouts that commonly use 18-22 radius
track switches. And they match up well with the Con-Cor Trains 72 scale lenght passenger cars, which were also designed to run on the 18-22 inch radius track and
switches. Just about every other brand of "HO" passenger cars are modeled after 85 Ft scale lenght passenger cars, which are really nice in appearace, but do need
a minimum of 24-26 inch radius track and switches to operate smoothly.
So shown below are the roadnames being offered by Bachmann on this run, and
the matching Con-Cor 72 Ft scale cars we would recommend you buy to go with them. And as pointed out, the paint scheme on the FA-2 freight engines is slightly
different than the passenger car schemes, but on the real railroads they ran that way often. (Just check out photos of your favorite railroad's FA-2's and will often
find them pulling passenger trains. So if you run 18-22 inch radius, then it's time to get your railroad in the passenger fleet business today !
