New Haven "McGinnis" " Black-Red Scheme. 1940's- 1950's Era. Combine Car Shown below.
Following the 1948 takeover of the company by Frederic Dumaine and Patrick McGinnis, the New Haven had little hope of ever remaining profitable again. Under their “pencil pusher” leadership they slashed costs wherever possible. But in one area they achieved some prominence, and that was the bold black and vermilion red paint scheme nick named the "McGinnis" Scheme.

Milwaukee "Olympian" 1930's - 1940's Baggage Mail Car shown below

Prior to the introduction of the "Hiawatha Trains" in the late 1930's, they were preceeded by the Milwaukee "Olympian" Heavyweight trains which starting running in the late 1920's. These cars are an exact paint match to the Fox Valley Hiawatha sets, so they are a perfect fit with your Hiawatha consists. The full roll out of the more modern Hiawatha train sets were delayed by WWII, so these heavyweight cars were seen in service till the early 1950's.

All railroads had some cars in its passenger fleet that were used in local or branchline service. Often these were older cars that had spent the prime of their life on the mainline "name train" inter-city service. Some railroads like the C&NW, Southern Pacific, Pennsylvania, and Canadian Pacific had hundreds of cars in their commuter fleets.

No two railroads used exactly the same designs for their cars, and the lengths of the cars varied as well. Also many cars were sold off as "hand me downs" to smaller roads to be used on mixed train branchline service. So these cars could be at home on any prototype railroad, large or small.

We chose to model them as 65 Ft long cars, so they would run on 18 inch radius curves of the average home layout. The time era for these cars stretched from the 1920's to well into the late 1950's.

Note on our "Solarium cars", shown below lighted up. Solarium Cars have been rarely modeled, and yet they were a very popular car during the heavyweight era. On some roads they were called "Solariums" and on other railroads "Sun Room" cars, but all had the same features... Tall windows in the parlour area at the rear of the cars to bring in sunlight. The Pullman company built untold numbers of them between 1928 and 1931. Most went into "Pullman" pool service, meaning they ran with the Pullman name on them and with Pullman employees on board. Because they were Pullman owned cars, and only leased to the various railroads they often do not shown up on rosters of specific railroads, but yet, here they were running at the end of many of the most famous heavyweight passenger trains. Many were built for specific railroads, so for example you can find photos of them in books on the Burlington, Great Northern, Canadian Pacific just to name a few. Many changed hands over the years. For instance, the four Solairum cars on the Burlington, were later sold to the Pennsylvania. Solariums were also used to provide first class service to coach passengers on shorter inter-city runs.

The same fantastic car lighting system used on our HO mP54 series of cars will also come built into this new series of B.C.S. series cars...

  • The Santa Fe "Valley Flyer" Scheme orginated in 1939, but the train only ran for a couple of years before the dwinding passengers due to WWII took its toll. But these cars still in their Valley Flyer Paint could be found roaming other stretches of Santa Fe trackage well into the 1940's. These cars can be mixed and matched with our 72 Ft long "Santa Fe Valley Flyer cars". Once the railroads started to introduce the more modern streamlined cars, mixed trains of both styles could be found until well into the late 1950's when the Heavyweight design cars were finally all retired.

The Patron Tequila Private Car is a private car owned by Patron Tequila Corporation of San Antonio Texas. No expense was spared to rebuild this car from it roots as an original Gulf Mobile and Ohio business car orginally built in the 1920.
It is Amtrak certified and runs many trips on publicity tours for Patron Tequila. We saw it passing through Tuscon Az, near our factory in May of 2014 which gave us the idea to make this model.
Since it is Amtrak certified and running today, no reason you can not run one behind your Amtrak consist in either your private or club layout.
Note we have even added a Drumhead to the rear of the car.
